Come Christmas time there is only one thing on everyone’s mind: gingerbread houses, of course! Since 2010, The Gingerbread House Event has created a fun event that the whole family can do together while supporting the Okanagan Boys and Girls Club. The Gingerbread House Event also offers some excellent Kelowna volunteer opportunities.
The Gingerbread House Event started as an idea in 2006 with the intent to create a fun and creative activity for families and the surrounding community. The event committee also wanted to host an event that everyone could participate in regardless of the state of their financial situation. The event supports the Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs Cool Moves program, which teaches kids about eating healthy and exercising daily.
The Gingerbread House Event also gives monetary and food donations to the Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs Christmas Hampers. The Okanagan Boys and Girls Club is the leader of children’s programs that support healthy choices, both physically and mentally. Children in the club experience new opportunities, build up positive relationships and develop confidence and other essential life skills.
The Gingerbread House Event is a family fun activity that has attracted over 800 participants in the last three years. All of the participants were there to support a good cause, help their community and build gingerbread houses. The event marries tradition and fun as well as the community working towards a worthy cause.
You can sign up to build a Gingerbread house with your family, friends or colleagues. The Gingerbread House Event not only encourages the construction of a house, it creates long-lasting memories for the participants (and maybe a mess or two!) One of the neat things about the event is that you can make a huge mess and you don’t even have to clean it up! The family fun atmosphere makes this a great way to start off the Christmas season and perhaps create a new tradition. If you don’t want build a house then you have the option of walking around to view the houses. You can look at the houses for free by bringing a can of food that will be donated to the Okanagan Boys and Girls Club.
If you have the urge to help others and are dedicated to your city you should consider volunteering for the Gingerbread House Event. In the past three years the event has provided over $1,000 worth of food, money and toys to the Okanagan Boys and Girls Club Cool Moves program.
Each year the Gingerbread House Event continues to grow and so does the need for volunteers. Anyone with the desire to help their local community is encouraged to volunteer for this event. Volunteer opportunities include spreading the word about the event, dressing up as mascots, coordinating sponsors, setting up for the event and more! The only things you need to have in order to become a volunteer for this event is to be dedicated, enthusiastic and live in Kelowna!
Around the holidays it seems everyone gets a little bit busier. You can still help with the event since the average time commitment for volunteers is 1-2 hours per week. Volunteering for the event will be fun and exciting and you’ll get to meet some great people who love helping others. If you think you would be a good match for any of the volunteer positions or just want more information, send an e-mail to .
If you are not able to donate your time consider making a donation in support of the event. You can also donate money for a package kit, which will go towards supporting a child who wants to participate in the Gingerbread House building contest but does not have the means to do so. Any donation over $20 will receive a tax-deductible receipt.
The next Gingerbread House Event will take place on December 1, 2013 from 10 am until 5 pm at the Rutland Centre. This is an exciting community event that will create new memories for you and your family for years to come.
